Spring Cleaning for Cat Parents
Spring Cleaning for Cat Parents: A Fresh Start for You and Your Feline Friend
Ahhh… can you smell it? Spring is in the air.
Like most people, I love this time of year. There’s something about the March winds and April rains that makes me want to throw open the windows and let the fresh air in—to blow away the cobwebs… and those winter cat hair tumbleweeds! (You know what I mean.)
My cat loves it too. As soon as the sun peeks out, he’s itching to get out on the porch for a good stretch, some birdwatching, and a little lazy sunbathing. And for me? Spring is also the perfect time to roll up my sleeves and do a little Spring Cleaning—not just for me, but for my cat too.
A clean space is more relaxing for everyone—two-legged and four-legged roommates. I swear, my cat lounges a little more luxuriously when his favorite spots are clean and tidy. So, if you're already thinking about sprucing things up, here’s a little Spring Cleaning checklist, cat-style.
Wash the Cat Beds and Blankets
Toss those cozy beds in the wash (or give them a good vacuum and spot clean if they’re not machine-washable). Fresh-smelling beds = happy cats.
Clean their favorite beds and blankets to keep things smelling fresh.
Replace the Litter Boxes
Did you know it’s recommended to replace plastic litter boxes every two years? Bacteria can build up in those tiny scratches, causing odors even if you’re cleaning regularly. Fresh box, fresh start! Check out Meow Cat Sitting’s favorite litter box: The Flip from ModKat.
Clean and Sanitize the Litter Area, and litter mats.
Don’t forget to clean under and around the litter boxes. A deep clean and sanitizing session can do wonders for your nose and your cat’s. Remember that Scent determines a cat’s world – choose pet friendly, scent free cleaning products for litterbox clean out. Check out our favorite type of litter mat for the easiest cleanup.
Clean and Replace Toys
Wash the washable ones, toss the ones that are too far gone, and maybe treat your cat to a new favorite. Enrichment and hygiene in one easy step.
Make it stand out
Clean or update your cats toys to keep playtime fresh and interesting.
Vacuum the Cat Tree
Use the upholstery tool on your vacuum and spot clean as needed. If the tree is starting to look like it survived a jungle expedition, it might be time to replace it. For stylish, modern upgrades, check out Hauspanther’s favorite cat furniture sources—your cat will thank you.
Upgrade Food Dishes
If you’re still using plastic bowls, consider switching to stainless steel. They’re easier to clean (especially for wet food), and more sanitary – preventing conditions like U.T. I. and feline acne.
Wipe Down the Cat Door Flap
Sticky paws and weather can make this a hidden grime zone. A quick wipe can make a big difference.
Clean the Cheek Rub-Spots Around the House
You know those spots—corners, door frames, furniture edges—where your cat rubs their face to scent-mark? Over time, those little love rubs leave behind oils and saliva that humans can eventually smell. A gentle wipe-down brings those areas back to fresh.
Spring is the season of renewal, and your cat’s world is no exception. A little extra effort now can go a long way toward creating a fresh, comfortable, and healthy space for both of you. And hey—once the cleaning’s done, you’ve totally earned a relaxing afternoon on the porch, cup of tea in hand, with a purring cat by your side.
Happy Spring Cleaning!
